Shared printer not printing

I have a wireless router and it is connected to my desktop which uses windows
me. My hp deskjet printer is also connected via usb to my desktop. I am
trying to print using my windows xp laptop. It gives me an error message?!
I can share files and use the internet, so why can't I print? I downloaded
the printer software online onto my laptop and it still doesn't print! I
checked to see if file/printer sharing is enabled and it is. What is wrong?
Someone please help!!!
