ok
I have 20 user pc's running W2000.
I used a pc running XP as a file server with all the different folders
having various security to different users.
The problem is this 10 connections thing in XP.

So
My question is, can I have loads of folders on a W98SE PC, all shared, with
controlled access to them by the relevant users. ????

What you need is a server operating system. There is no way around the
sharing limits of a client operating system.

How often you would like to access shared-folders concurrently?

Your XPs are Windows XP Professional or Home Edition?
As far as XP Pro's workgroup is concerned 10 is the maximum
but XP HE's is limited to 5 maximum.
Depending of your access of share-folders and/or shared resources of
workstations simultaneously,
you "MAY" be rejected or "MAY NOT".
Win98SE has no limitations regarding this issue,
but WinXP has.
Master browser will usually be to WinXp instead of Win98SE.
When you want that Win98SE is to be master browser,
then you can not use default master-browser,
Another word, you have to set as Win98SE is master browser,
and WinXp is NOT to be master-browser..)
=== These method is very tricky and sort of sophisticated... ,
I would NOT apply this kind of method rather
I would buy&use Small Business Server2k or 2k3.
(SBS' price is less than that of Win Server 2k or 2k3)
THEN your system will be stable, expandable and easy to control.
(But you can not use WindowsXP HE as client of domain.)
Good Luck!
