Shared Areas Across a Domain

Hi all,

First off, thanks in advance for the help and advice.

I’m currently having issues with shared data areas across my domain. O
my DC I have two shared areas that are located as follows,

File storage
C:\Data – share name is ‘data’ permissions are full for ‘everyone’ an
the pc name.

Printer
Printers share name is called ‘hpprinter’ again permissions are set t
full control for ‘everyone’

DC name is Tilsed
Netbios name is Tilsed0

The problem occurs when trying to connect to them, if I go to
workstation and tools – map network drive when expanding through th
tree the data storage does not appear. If I try to put in \\tilsed\data
or \\tilsed\c:\data$\ windows cannot find the location.

Same kind of story with the printer if I enter \\tilsed\hpprinte
windows cannot find the location.

I have tested this the reverse way by installing the printer locally t
a workstation and connecting to it which is fine.

The workstation is using the admin log on credentials.
The workstations shows up in AD
The DC can ping both the computer name and IP of the workstation.
The workstations can ping the IP of the server but not the serve
name?

If anyone has any ideas or needs more information please just ask and
will try them.

Thanks again,

Steve

Hello stevetilsed,

If you are not able to ping the DC with computername it sounds like DNS,
please post an unedited ipconfig /all frpm the DC and the client machine.

Additional sharing a folder on a DC's C-drive is not the best solution, file
shares should better reside on member servers or at least on another dsik
on the DC.

Is the workstation joined to the domain?

The admin account you use is the local workstation admin or a domain user
account? Please clarify this.

Best regards

Hello stevetilsed,

The ipconfig looks fine from server and workstation. Is any firewall running
on the DC or workstation? What OS are you using for both machines?

Best regards

Thanks for getting back to me,

From what i understand (which is not a lot) my issue is with th
router? What should the primary DNS of the router be? Itself? Or th
DC?

DC is running windows server R2
Computer is running XP Prof with no service packs.

The issue seems to definatly be with the DNS, whilst checking m
internet on the workstation it was not connected thus meaning my DN
forward lookups are incorret or it is not resolving DNS?

Is that right?

Thanks again

Hello stevetilsed,

Didn't realize that the router does DHCP. The DNS server provided from it
should be your DC, that is ok. But the router should not run any services,
either DNS or DHCP. Move the DHCP part to the DC and let that do the job.

If you have no internet on the machines, configure a FORWARDER in the DNS
management console on the DNS servers properties.

Thanks again,

So to sum up,

Leave the routers primary DNS pointing to itself? Turn DHCP on th
router off, and enable on the server and all should be well

Hello stevetilsed,

The router has no DNS setting. It has a WAN port public ip 212.74.111.194
, and a LAN connection, the 4 port switch with your private ip range 192.x.x.x
The router does not have any DNS setting.

See here about installing and authorizing and managing DHCP on the server:
