share a printer on WIN98

I have a printer on my XP and a connected WIN98 computer
via router. I would like to send print jobs from WIN98 to
that printer. How can I do that?

On XP, go to Control Panel | "Printers and Other Hardware" and click
"View installed printers or fax printers". If your printer's icon has
a hand under it, it's already shared. If it doesn't, right click the
printer, click Sharing, and follow the prompts. Make the printer's
share name 1-12 alphanumeric characters, with no blanks.

On WIN98, go to Start | Settings | Printers, click "Add printer", and
follow the prompts to install the XP printer as a network printer.

I used your information to share my printer with my laptop(WXP) and desktop
(W98SE) and I got the hands shown in each case but when I tried printing
from my desktop I got a message error writing to EPUSB1 - check printer ic
configured to use a valid port.
I use a crossover cable between pc's
Can you suggest what I do now?

You're welcome.

I'm not sure what's wrong. I think that you installed the printer on
W98SE as a local printer, and W98SE is trying to connect to it through
a USB port on the local computer. Since the printer is connected to
the XP computer, un-install it on W98SE and then re-install it as a
network printer.

I have reinstalled the printer as a network printer but it now appears as
greyed and when I right click there is no heading "sharing"
What have I done wrong?

You only make the printer shared on one computer: the one that it's
physically connected to. In this case, it's the XP computer.

You install it as a network printer on the other computer. In this
case, it's the W98SE computer. The computer isn't shared on W98SE,
because it isn't physically connected to W98SE. It doesn't have a
Sharing setting, and doesn't have a hand under it. That's normal.

I have installed the printer as a network printer and I now get the message
"There was an error writing to LPT1 for the printer(Epson 880). Cannot
access the port. It may be in use by another printer."
I may have chosen the wrong port when installing it. Was LPT1 correct? I
always thought that LPT1 was the correct port for printers.
I should point out that I have also a laser printer on my desktop but I
can't see that would make a difference.

You don't understand what a "network printer" is. It means that the
printer is physically connected to another computer on the network,
and that the printer isn't physically connected to the Win98SE
computer.

If there were a cable running directly from the Win98SE computer to
the printer, it would be physically connected to the Win98SE printer,
and it would be a "local printer". But there isn't, so it's a
"network printer".

Since the printer isn't connected to your Win98SE computer, you can't
tell it to use the Win98SE computer's LPT1 port for the printer. LPT1
is your printer's parallel port, and the printer isn't connected to
your computer's parallel port.

This should get everything working:

1. Un-install the printer on the Win98SE computer.

2. Run the "Add Printer" wizard.

3. Tell it to install a network printer.

4. When it asks for the network path or queue name, press the Browse
button and locate the shared printer on the other computer.

You haven't got any advice to offer on my network printer prob have you
? no-ones responded yet

I have a network printer that my computer says "cannot be found" when I
try and print. It's installed fine, shared name is sub 12 char and no
spaces, I browsed to it ok using add network printer procedure.
Everything picks it up until I try to print. Tried two different brand
printers as well, so it's a prob with the setup somewhere, not the
actual printer.
