Share performance poor over WAN VPN connection

Hi all,
we hab big problems to open a file on a windows 2003 storage server over a
WAN/VPN 2Mbit SDSL Connection. It is very slow if I opened a file (excel) via
explorer (Windows XP) 30sec. How can I tune this slow share connection ?
