When A Share is not a Share

Strange problem I'm trying to help with. Perhaps this is just a windows
function I've never seen before?

Problem is this... user's computer locked up while working in a file. Now
she's getting an error that the file is in use and must be re-opened. Easy
enough. I was going to try and unlock the file, but I can't find the file
from my workstation. On the user's station I was able to copy the original
file, delete the old file and rename the copy, but it still says its in use.

She is accessing the file as \\server\share\folder\filename.xls. If I open
this on my station, I see nothing (could be security rights). However when I
look at the physical server, there is no share with that name, even if I
look at all shares, including hidden shares in computer management. I
searched the whole hard drive for filename.xls and its not there.

I know you can set out a virtual folder mapping using DFS, but can you
virtualize a share from a different server?

Thanks,
Brian

on the server, run net share and on the client, run net view \\servername.
post back with the result.
