Hello,

This is a pretty basic question, but I've had no luck finding a solution on the web. I have a desktop and a laptop that both connect to the internet through the same router. The laptop connects wirelessly and the PC connects through an ethernet cord. The laptop has been on the fritz lately, so I need to copy files from the laptop to the PC. The files I need are too large to copy onto a CD or upload to the internet.

How can I copy directly between the two of these? I created a shared folder on the laptop called temp. Then I tried to access the shared folder from the desktop by running the following command

\\laptop_machine_name\temp

When I try to run that it always tells me the destination couldn't be found.

I'm sure I'm missing a step somewhere, but can't figure it out. Is this the right syntax?

Cheers,
Jules

You could try to use TeamViewer, a remote control program. It has built in file transfer feature and you can transfer your files from a machine to another machine. It is very easy to use and it is free.
I think you get this error because the destination machine is preventing the access of the other computer. Check the firewall and make sure that this isn't blocked.

TeamViewer is good.. The FTP enables you to transfer data from a remote system.

Share files between PCs on a network

How can I share files between different PCs on my home network?

Windows XP gives every user a Shared Folder for this very purpose. Step one is to share some documents; go to My Computer and look for the Shared Documents folder… anything you put in here will be available. Alternatively, you can share other folders without putting them into Shared Documents by changing their security settings. Right-click on the folder you wish to share, and then click Sharing and Security. Check off the box next to Share this folder on the network. If you want others to be able to modify and delete your shared files, check off the box next to Allow network users to change my files.

To access the shared files on a particular system, type \\COMPUTERNAME into the Explorer address bar and hit enter. The window will reload and you’ll see icons for each different folder and/or device that computer is sharing. To find out the name of a computer, go to the Control Panel, double-click the System icon and then click on the Computer Name tab. You should see a line that reads “Full computer name: computername”, where computername is the name of your machine.,..copied
