Hi

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I have 4 machines (all XPPro SP2 with NTFS) on a P2P network via a 3COM
adsl router which handles DHCP. Each machine has Norton Firewall installed.

The network is running fine but I'm struggling with sharing. I currently
have:-

Tom on PC1
Dick on PC2
Harry on PC3
Bert on PC4

Tom's machine has a number of files and folders that I want to share
exclusively with other users, e.g. I want to share as follows:

Dick to have full access to Folder1, Folder2 and Folder3 on PC1 (Tom)
Harry to have full access to Folder1 on PC1 (Tom)
Bert to have read only access to Folder2 on PC1 (Tom)

I have disabled 'Simple File Sharing' and currently as I understand it I
have to set up each machine with the same set of Users, so that I can share
folders/files to specific users on the network. However, this doesn't seem
to work properly, my first share worked as expected but subsequent shares
resulted in 'Access Denied'

Can I set the system up so that only Dick when logged on to PC2 can access
a shared folder on Tom's PC1?

Is there a web site somewhere that can give me some simple instructions?

My initial search on Google found some sites, but the instructions assumed
a thorough knowledge of file sharing and networks.

TIA

Best regards
Barry

Without using "Encyption" or "Password" protection for the folders I
don't think you can.See level 4 & 5 permissions.

A small bit of advice would be to take off norton firewall on all the
machines, and make sure the xp firewall is not active, then start
troubleshooting. Google for XP permissions.

Turning off the firewalls a good place to start but turn of you internet
connection first!! Hours of fun can be had by altering security and
permissions - however if you want to be able for bill to access a folder and
freds pc and that pc does not have a user account for bill - how can he be
given permission to access?
I have a similar scenario - i did not want a full on home network, but just
access to some shared resources, in the end i created user accounts for all
on my pc and gave the permission on said folder for users to access. now
from their pc's in network neighbourhood they have a link to the folder that
opens no problem. There are lots of ways to share but its finding what suits
that counts. When i am rich i will add network attached storage drive to my
network to resolve such issues!!
