Anyone know how to share a drive in the Win98 "exit to DOS" mode so that it
can be seen on the network?

Have you tried the NET USE command (type 'net use /?' for help)?

Net commands do not share the drive. They allow the PC to see other shared
devices on the net.

You can get the dos network client from the microsoft site here

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/clients/msclient/

There are two (floppy) disks. You only need disk1 to establish a
netbeui connection. You will probably also need a dos driver for your
network card.

If you want to run file sharing services from dos you need the updated
net.exe available in this archive file

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/wg1049.exe

If running file sharing services, don't let the dos machine anywhere
near the Internet since there is no fix for dos (or windows3.1) for
the single character password bug later corrected by patch in win9x

James,

Thanks for the input. I will give it a try and let you know if I am
successful.

James,

My Win98 PC is a virtual machine and accordingly I am covering new ground
with limited time. It will take me some time to work with what you have given
me. What is on disk 2 ? Disk 1 looks a lot like the files on MS Workgroup add
on for dos.

The info I posted was to set up a sharing dos machine without win98
(ie having exited to DOS).

Disk1 contains the files necessary to set up a netbeui network. You
need disk two also if you want to enable tcp/ip or ipx/spx

You are meant to run setup from disk1 (having exited to dos) or to
boot from disk1 and then run setup from there. The setup program will
tell you to insert disk2 if it is needed.

What you do with a virtual machine, I've no idea. Perhaps it's not
applicable.

You might want to check out Bart's Network Boot Disk, I think it might
work with VM.

James,

Underestood about DOS, my app runs best in Win98 "exit to DOS" mode. I
downloaded the files to my PC desktop then placed a floppy in A: and ran the
program from A:. It installed the files on the floppy. I then switched to the
VPC (virtual PC) desktop and from the Win98 DOS window ran a:setup. I then
got a request to install the virtual graphics driver (previously downloaded a
copy from intel). I did not get a request for disk 2 and the program asked me
to reboot. The VM failed to reboot and crashed. The good thing about VM are
that you don't have to try and recover your machine. I just copied the backup
of the virtual hard drive over the failed one and was back where I started
before the install. I need some time to try and work things out.

The new files were installed in c:\net. I presume that I should install the
update net.exe into that directory and then overwite the matching files (from
c:\net) found in c:\windows\command\.

Yes. That's what is intended in a real mode dos situation.

I don't think so. Windows\command is for win98 programs and you aren't
in win98 any longer at this point.

After the aforementioned reboot where it all went pear shaped,
autoexec.bat and config.sys should run the appropriate commands and
load the appropriate drivers to run everything from their current
location in c:\net
