Share access problem using VPN

I have a problem accessing server shares when I use VPN.

Setup
Checkpoint VPN Server
Laptop running Windows XP and Secure Remote.
(Laptop is a member of our domain)

Description of problem.
1- I log on to the laptop with my DOMAIN account.
2- I connect to the VPN using Secure Remote
3- When I try to access a server share \\server or “\\IP Address I’m
prompted to enter a username and a password.
4- I get a duplicate username log-on error when I enter my own domain
username and password since it’s the same username and password as the logon
user.

The server name and IP resolve correctly and I can open a web site running
on the same srver using IE. I simple can't access the server shares.

I found a workaround that works, but it's not practical.
1- Log on to the laptop using a LOCAL account.
2- Connect to the VPN using Secure Remote
3- Try to access a server share. Enter domain username and password when
prompted to enter a username and a password.

Does anyone know what might be causing this and how I can fix it.

Thanks

When you log on, make sure you log in using Dial-Up check box - so it forces
authentication.

I tried, but that won't help. Checking the "Dial-up" checkbox forces you to
use modem dialup before you log on. I have high speed Internet and I'm using
Checkpoint VPN not Microsoft VPN.

Good morning Alex.
It would be useful to know the exact text of the "duplicate username log-on
error" message you receive.
As a test you could also try to insert the username in the form
(E-Mail Removed)insuffix in place of the traditional
domainname\username.

Let me know

Here is the error message

"Logon Unsuccessful
The user name you typed is the same as the user name you logged in with.
That user name has already been tried. A domain controller cannot be found to
verify that user name."

Your suggestion was helpful. the remote share access worked when I used
(E-Mail Removed)insuffix instead of just the username or
domainname\username.

Good morning Alex.
I'm happy the suggestion worked.
The full error message is interesting because it says to you the problem is
finding a domain controller.
Probably the remote computers fails when trying to resolve the netbios name
of your domain.
If you really need to use the old domain\username form, a trick could be to
modify your lmhosts file inserting a line like this

ipofthedomaincontroller Domaincontrollername #DOM:domainname

example

192.1.1.1 DC01 #DOM:MYDOMAIN

Remember to remove the extension after the file (.SAM and so on) or else
it'll not work

OK Same Issue here

Description of problem.
1- I log on to the laptop with my DOMAIN account.
2- I connect to the VPN using "QuickVPN" and "LINKSYS RV042 Router"
3- When I try to access a server share \\server or "\\IP Address" I'm
prompted to enter a username and a password.
4- I get a duplicate username log-on error when I enter my own domain

I have enterred in the LMHOST file the line (192.1.1.1 DC01 #DOM:MYDOMAIN)
I have added WINS to the Cleint and Server and enabled this.
Another version is "Alex's" work around is logon as another domain account
You will not you then get access to both users file access (like home folders)

This seems to be happening on our Sonicwall cleints as well after latest XP
security releases.

Now the a local script will work if I rename all maps to IP address but not
if I use Netbios mapping. I am trying not make this complicated for my end
users but want to aviod scripts sitting on a desktop

Hi Mark.
A solution could be enable wins forward lookup on you DNS server.
It's a tab on the properties of your DNS server zone.
The client would then try to resolve netbios using DNS (and it seems that
DNS is working correctly).
