2003 server with xp pro workstations. Several workstations will not show up
on network. Cannot map to their driver or printers but they can map others.
netbios is checked. firewall is turned off. they are admin stations.
machines/users show up in active directory as well as dhcp address leases.
when i try to map to their shared drives they are not available. any ideas?

Are you trying to map via \\ip_address\share or \\computer_name\share.

I would first start by querying the adapter on the client
machines and verify they are getting the correct address
on your network e.g., ipconfig /all. Next, I would attempt
to ping the machines from the W2k server and vice versa.
Start with the most basic form of connectivity in order to
rule them out e.g., cable, nic, name resolution. If it turns
out it is name resolution, you have to again query the
adapter settings and verify the clients are registering with
the correct DNS server. If all checks out okay then run
nslookup on the client machines agains the machine name
incluind the domain name e.g.,
nslookup mymachinename.mydomian.com

If you are still having trouble post the exact error messages.

nslookup brian.centralmedical.com responded this way....
cannot find server name for address 192.168.1.181: non -existent domain.
Default servers are not available

server: unknown
address:192.168.1.181
Can't find Brian.centralmedical.com: Non-existent domain

There is your issue. 192.168.1.181 is your DNS server I
presume? If so check the DNS log in the event viewer and
see what's happening with your DNS Server.

I've searched high and low to no avial. Seems like removing and
reinstalling DNS is your only option. Try posting the event ids to
one of the DNS groups..
