1. If I want to set up a pc with a wireless nic/usb and a wireless router (netgear mr814),
will I first have to use a wired connection to configrue the router, or assuming I know the
settings (default SSID, channel and no WEP), could i configure the pc to find it wirelessly?
2. Any recommendations on the best client hardware to use? Not necessarily brands (see #3),
but rather a pci nic with a stub antenna versus a USB box with/without a stub antenna versus
a USB keyfob thing. Any thoughts on which might provide faster connections? What about the
fact that the pc nic antenna and the keyfob thing would be stuck behind the pc, versus the
USB box sitting somewhere more wide-open to the airwaves?
3. If I will be using a netgear mr814 wireless router, should I stick with a netgear nic or
will other brands connect fine (and provide decent throughput)? Side note: I will also be
using a Linksys WUSB11 to connect a TiVo box to the same LAN. Should I be worried about
compatibility between the Linksys, the netgear router and/or the other wireless nic (on the
pc)?
4. If the pc with the wireless nic will be in a loft-type room in a townhouse, whare is the
best place to locate the router/dsl modem? Would a room on the same floor but behind a wall
be better than downstairs, with no walls in the way (although possibly a floor will b ein the
way)?
Thanks very much for your help!
