I'm quite new to the world of WiFi.

I have a wireless gateway and so does my neighbour. How can we link
our gateways or access each others gateways in order to be able to use
each others network?

You need a wireless bridge to connect the two access points, and then
you need to use the same SSID and WEP encryption keys.
