I have never needed to use Internet Connection Sharing having always
followed my own advice and provided a WAP for wireless connections so my
basic diagnosis questions may be slightly off the mark. The problem is
nothing to do with workgroups at this stage. That will only affect file
sharing.
Bring up a command window (Start/Run/ and type CMD).
Then type ipconfig /all on both your computers and let us see what IP
configuration you have. We would need to look at the IP addresses allocated
to each interface and at the default gateway setting on both computers. I am
sure someone who has used ICS will know whet these should be otherwise I can
probably make a very good guess!
We may also need to look at any firewall settings on both computers as these
might be blocking access.
Is your laptop set up for getting its IP address automatically? Ipconfig
will tell us
Look at the IP addresses and see if the ping command works both ways. Ask
for more detailed instructions if you don't know what the ping commend is.
If this works then
Try pinging the cable modem internal IP address from both computers.
If this works then
Try pinging
www.google.com from both computers.
Good luck
