I have a PC running Win Me,which is connected to a NetGear wireless router.
The second PC running XP Home with a wirless adapter that can share the cable
internet connection without any problems. I am trying to setup the WinME PC
as a server to share a printer and a scanner. When I run Network Setup Wizard
and create a Network Setup Diskette, Win XP PC does not recognize the WinME
network setup diskette.

I have the Client for Microsoft Networks running on the WinMe PC, along with
the appropriate access control and file and printer sharing.

Any help with setting up the Win XP PC to access the printer connected to
the Win Me PC is much appreciated.

Thanks,
_M

All that is necessary is to have "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft
Networks" set up on the Windows Me PC; which you state is the case. Beyond
that, you have to configure the printer to be shared.

On the Windows Me computer:

Just select the printer, and set up the share. Right click on the printer
properties and you should get a menu which includes a selection for
"Sharing".

On the other computers which will access the shared printer:

Install the drivers for the printer. You will have to do this as if the
printer were actually attached to the computer. Once the printer drivers are
in place you should be able to find the shared printer among the network
resources listed in Network Properties.

Win XP doesn't recognize the Win ME network setup diskette because Win
XP is a newer operating system than Win Me. That diskette only works
on Win 95/98/Me.

Win XP has a Network Setup Wizard that will do what you want. Run it
on both computers, and tell it that they connect to the Internet
through a residential gateway, which is what the Wizard calls a
router. To run the Wizard on XP, click Start | All Programs |
Accessories | Communications | Network Setup Wizard. It can create a
setup diskette to run the Wizard on Win Me.

Windows has file and printer sharing capabilities, but not scanner
sharing.

Steve, if ME is setup as server why would you use the XP network setup
diskette on it? If ME is setup to share resources, XP would, by simply
running the setup wizard, will recognize the network and start seeing the ME.
One thing I have noticed though, in my case, firewalls on each PC is the
biggest factor in preventing the PCs seeing each other. Correct config of
each firewall seems to be the answer in most cases. Just a thought.

Good question, Keefer. If ME is already fully set up as a server,
it's OK, but not necessary, to run XP's network setup diskette on it.

Running the diskette is the easiest way to set everything up. It
works on Windows 95, 98, Me, and XP. It sets up the computer to share
its resources with other computers (server) and to access resources on
other computers (client). It automatically shares printers and
creates a Shared Documents folder.

All - Thanks for the replies! Happy New Year to everyone! I was able to
share the HP printer and other folders and am able to print from the XP PC. I
did enter an IP address for the NT Domain but there's still one minor error
message that appears when I start the Me PC. It says something about no DNS
Domain Server available. It doesn't seem to affect anything that I am doing
but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks,
_M
