Hello All

I am running Windows 2003 Server and SQL 2K. I would like to configure
SMTP services on my Windows 2003 Server so I can send and receive
emails from you server. I do not have a MS Exchange server I want some
tasks on my Windows Server to be able to send out emails and be able
to receive emails.

Please guide me how I can set up SMTP service on my Windows 2003
server. I have already started the default SMTP Service. Also I have a
domain on the SMTP server and a alias for the domain. My server is
testserv and my domain is mycompany.com .

I tried configuring outlook 2000 to point to my above server to send
and recieve emails but it seems not to work.

Please advise I am a newbie to SMTP.

Thanks
Belinda

Hi Belinda,
Having the SMTP service is not enough. SMTP is a "mail transfer"
protocol - you cannot retrieve email via SMTP, you need another protocol
like POP3 or IMAP. Anyway, Windows Server 2003 now has a built-in POP3
service so you can configure it as a full fledged mail server, check out
this detailed article on how to do this on Microsoft's web site:

"Mail server role: Configuring a mail server"
http://tinyurl.com/3gsg4

....or refer to the same article in Help and Support Center (search for
"Configuring a mail server").

It sounds like you need a POP3 server too, and not only SMTP.

You maybe want to look here:
