having problems setting up the wireless on one of my computer, I'm using a
linksys routor and a Balkin 54mbps wireless pci card.. no problem finding
available networks but when I put my network Encryption key in ( which is 22
digits) I get this warning massage: The network password needs to be 40bits
or 104bits. This can be entered as 5 or 13 asci characters or 10 or 26
hexadecimal characters....... I've done two other computer on this network
but didn't get this problem. has this anything to do with the Balkin card as
the other ones are a different brand. also when setting this network up I
set the security Mode as WPA-Personal, should this have been "wap" ? and the
Encryption Method as TKIP ? Any help would be very welcome.

rather confusing what,

what encryption system did you use on the other 2 comps, WPA-PSK or WEP.

sounds like you are getting them mixed up.

the 5 or 13 or 10 or 26 characters relate to 64 and 128 bit WEP.

.................................................. .................................

Thanks for the help................. The encryption on the other two is
WPA-PSK, even using this it still won't except my 22 digit key.

OK. Do all the wireless adaptors in the PCs support WPA-PSK? And does teh
router support it?

If so, I suggest that you configure with WPA-PSK and a key that is is made
up of random characters.

Then get each PC to connect and supply this same key.

WPA is more secure than WEP and is easier to assign a key because it can be
any length rather than being one of several specific lengths.

Thanks for the advice, The router ( linksys) definitely supports WPA-PSK as
I have two laptop's connecting wirelesley at the moment.but wasn't sure of
the Tower wireless adapter so I bought a new one, It's a linksys WMP. 54G,
installed it and it and I still have the same problem, will only connect
with wap and not WPA-PSK, so now I have two questions, is it passable to
delete the wireless configuration from the computer/router and start anew
with wap, or.... can I change the configuration from WPA-PSK to wap. as so
far I can't find the way to do neither !

You don't say what OS you are using. You may need XP SP2 to get what you
want...

WAP is a term relating to mobile phone browser
technology.........................you must mean WEP

I have googled the WMP 54G card and it appears to be only
WEP..............surely you checked this out before buying a new card.

Go get a PCI WLAN card that supports WPA.............
