I have a Sony Vaio TR1MP with built in 802.11b and a Dell PC which i
bought a USB EDIMAX 7117 usb Adapter for. Both have Windows XP Pro.

I have set both up and they can 'see' eachother and connect etc. They
can also see each others shared folders. However they cannot access
eachother's shared files and I cannot get them to share internet or
prnters with eachother.

When I try to set up an internet connection through the network the
wireless is not shown as a network adapter in the 'new connection
wizard' and so I can't continue.

Both have firewalls deactivated and I am trying to do this in AD_Hoc
mode. All I want to do is share my broadband access.

I also have a wired network and I can do this fine with wires so why
wont it work without wires!!

Any help would be appreciated and if you need more info please ask.

Regards,

James

have you set the SSID to the same name as your network eg MSHOME or
WORKGROUP ?

You try the NIC protocol NWlink IPX/SPX Netbios compatible on the
machines? That's what I use on the XP Pro and Win 2K machines on wired to
wireless connections. Using NetBeui would not work as the machines could
be seen but not accessed.

You will need to tell the host based FW on both machines to accept
traffic for the IP(s) for ports 137-138 UDP and 139/445 TCP the Windows
Networking ports for NT based machines.

You should make sure you uninstall Netbeui first.

After all that,

Get a router/Access Point, DO NOT install SPX/IPX, or other protocols,
they aren't particularly useful.

If you look in the flyers on Sunday, you will likely find a
Router/Switch/802.11b AP combo for ~$30 after rebates.

Do explain that one, since you have made a comment on it. And it became
useful to me since by using Netbeui as the protocol with WEP enabled on the
Linksys 11S4 V1 router that I use, the machines wouldn't connect. But by
using NWlink IPX/SPX and using a host based FW on the machines to protect
the NETbios ports, things are perfectly safe.

Maybe, the OP doesn't want to get router. And maybe, he is just looking for
a solution to get him past his problem of using AD-hoc and a ICS gateway
machine using wireless and nothing else.

I don't want to buy a router because this should be possible using the
equipment i have already.

I have tried to change the SSID to MSHOME but it does not rename the
netowrk it just adds the network MSHOME to the prefered wireless
network list.

I'm not too great at this stuff, if you could explain it in simple
words I'd appreciate it as I didn;t really understand the ohter posts!

Thanks Guys.

The link tells you how to install network protocols NWlink being one of
them.

Just make sure you uninstall NetBeui first.

http://support2.epson.net/manuals/en...00/ADM_G/COMP_
3.HTM

Protect the NetBios ports on your LAN machines. Those are the ports I
talked about in my other posts.

You can implement IPsec which is part of the XP and Win2k O/S(s). The
AnalogX link on IPsec provides the ZIP file you can install to protect
the Windows Networking Ports and allow your machines to share resources
without being attacked on the ports.

http://www.analogx.com/contents/articles/ipsec.htm

Since you're not using a router, use IPsec and the host based FW on the
machine for a layered protection approach.

IPsec is very powerful and is also can be used with VPN between machines
on a LAN. You may want to look into it use Google.

A basic thing with IPsec

http://www.petri.co.il/ipsec_block_ping.htm

You should config the O/S to protect themselves on the machines.

http://www.uksecurityonline.com/husdg/windows2000.php

Use the same SSID and channels

You don't need XP's Wizard for NT based O/S. The Wizard of to connect the
XP O/S to Win 9'x and ME O/S(s).
