Setting up wireless LAN

Hi All,

Apologies for posting a rather basic question but I want to make sure
I buy the right stuff. (I work in PC Support so I'm already slighty
embarrassed that I know next to nothing about Wireless Networking!)

I want to set up a very basic network for sharing my ADSL. My plan is
to have a router in my bedroom connected to ADSL. This would be used
to connect via Cat5 cables to my PC and PS2/XBox. I would then have a
wireless network card in my girlfriends PC downstairs.

Is this possible and do I need any more kit. I have looked on
ebuyer.com and I believe that all I need is a Linksys Wireless-G
54MBps Broadband Router and a Linksys Wireless 54MBps PCI Adapter PC
Card.

I'm grateful for an advice/tips people can offer.

Many Thanks,

Dave Bulwer

Why use G when you can get B a lot cheaper and it works just fine at ADSL rates?
You could get by with something like a Netgear MR814 ($55 at amazon.com, comes
with $20 rebate) and whatever wireless NIC make sense for your configuration. I
use a USB Belkin F5D6050 ($22.49 refurbished from Belkin) and it has pretty good
range. If you don't want to run cable to one of your computers, just get
another wireless NIC. I use ADSL with Windows XP Pro.

Dave,

As the other poster has stated if its just for sharing internet access with
your girlfriend using 802.11b is more than fast enough (though I choose a
54G solution myself - as I may want to use my network for more than net
access in future)

However, the question I had is do you already have a ADSL router?

From your post I presume not..

Its just that the WRT54G-UK (Ebuyer QuickFind code: 45023) wont work with an
ADSL line by itself in the UK as it doesn't contain a built in ADSL modem.

You need a router with a built in ADSL modem - if you want to go the 54G
route..

I don't think Linksys have released their "all in one" model yet but you
would be looking for something like the Netgear DG834G or the Belkin
F5D7630UK4A - both being released this month (as are other manufacturers)

Alternatively you can buy a cheap ADSL router and tell it to pass all the
traffic to something like the Linksys Broadband Router you mentioned above
(which will actually do all the networking..) which is effectively just an
Wireless Access Point

uk.telecom.broadband and uk.comp.home-networking may be useful for you as
well.

Regards
Sunil

Thanks for your responses - Yes, I just want to share ADSL between 2
PC's and an X-Box or PS2 so the cheaper option is probably best. Last
time I looked, the routers were expensive so I assumed that the 54MB
was the standard now as 80GBP didn't sound too much.

Just as a comment here... I am less than thrilled with our Linksys WRT54G. I
have no problems establishing a connection with good signal, but it drops
the internet ON THE WIRELESS ONLY from time to time. It does hold onto the
internet through the wired connection, though.
