Hi

I have a LAN setup in the office with Win server 2000. I wish to set up a
vpn connection when I am at home. It is for only one laptop.

Questions:
1. Does Server 2000 comes with a vpn server?
2. As the domain controller, will it be overloaded?
3. Do you guys have a step-by-step manual to do it the most easiest way?

many thanks in advance.

Richard

1. Yes, RRAS can be configured to allow VPN access.
2. It is not a good idea to use a DC as a remote access server. It can cause
lots of problems, because the DC is multihomed as soon as a remote user
connects.

How does your LAN connect to the Internet? Does the gateway router
support incoming VPN?

Hi Bill

Thanks for helping out.

There is a gateway router. But we don't have a fixed IP address. Would that
be a problem? I heard from a friend who said that the router is capable of
updating the IP address automatically thus not needing to apply for a fixed
IP from the ISP.

Many thanks again and regards

Sorry missed this question.

Can I use a Win Professional as a VPN server?

There are orgaisations like Dyndns which can keep your public DNS name
pointing to the router's current IP.

Yes, XP Pro can act as a VPN server for one client using Incoming
Connections. If the XP machine is on a private LAN, you will need to connect
to the public IP of the router and configure the router to extend the VPN
connection to the LAN machine (but you can test the VPN setup on the LAN
using the target XP machine's private IP).

HI Bill

Sounds very complicated. Looks like I need some research first.

Many thanks

Richard

I think that W2k Pro should be able to act as a VPN server for a single
client. I don't have one handy to check. Have a look for "incoming
connections" in help.
