Setting up VPN server

This is my first venture into VPN and I am failing spectacularly! So
guidance would be most welcome!

I have a Safecom SWAMRU 54108 ADSL modem/router which has an inbuilt VPN
server. I am trying to set it up to accept an incoming VPN tunnel from a
Windows 98SE machine. On the latter I have installed the Microsoft Virtual
Private Networking Adaptor - this has no configurable parameters just
Username, Password and hostname.

I have followed the suppliers instructions for the SWAMRU 54108 at
http://safecom.cn/code/product/adsl/...rver-setup.htm This
essentially requires you to:
- Enable VPN
- Enable NetBIOS broadcast
It does not tell you to do anything with IKE protocol and IPsec protocol.
nor with Dynamic VPN setting or L2TP settngs - so I have left them all
blank.
It tells you to input PPTP Server Settings:
- Enable PPTP Server
- Virtual IP of PPTP Server (I leave this as default)
- Authentication of PAP
- MPPE Encryption is left unenabled.
- Tunnel Name
- User name
- Password
I have set these all although the User Name is not the same as that used on
the Win98 machine used to connect in.

To test this I establish a dialin connection to the Internet and run the VPN
client. This reports that there is an error. When I look at the router log
it shows that contact has been made but broken off by the client
immediatley - "[peer] (3) I am closing down"

What am I missing.
Ideas and guidance would be most welcom

TIA
Chris

Sorry, not an answer but just to say that I am trying to do exactly the
same as you but with an EN5861 router. Likewise I have had no success.

Are you using the EN5861 as the endpoint or is there a server running
the VPN behind it? I have set up several systems using these routers to
pass through VPN connections and could probably help if this is what you
are trying to do.

I've successfully set up a computer running XP on my LAN as a VPN host
and can telnet in to that from a laptop running SE. But it doesn't give
me access to any of the other computers on the LAN. That's why I wanted
to try to use the EN5861 as the VPN server in the hope that I could then
access any or all of the other computers.

Erm, telnet?

If the network you are connecting *from* uses the same subnet as the
network you are connecting *to* then you will see this problem.

Er, no! Slip of the brain!

I'm not connecting *from* a network as such. The laptop is connected to
the Internet via dial-up and a dynamic WAN IP.

When connecting the laptop locally via ethernet it usually has the IP
address of 192.168.254.3. When connected remotely it is issued with any
other free IP within that subnet by the host computer running XP in
cooperation with the router.

I can then connect to the host computer which is 192.168.254.2, but not
to any of the other computers on that subnet.

I have a similar problem that I would welcome advice on.

My router and VPN server has a DHCP server that is allocating IPs 10.0.0.1
upwards with netmask 255.255.255.0
The PPTP server, within that router, allocates itself an IP address of
10.0.5.1 and clients as 10.0.5.2 upwards with, I presume, a netmask of
255.255.255.0.

So the client PC gets an IP address of 10.0.5.2. It can see my router at
10.0.0.2 but nothing else on the remote network. Do I have to put an entry
in the router's routing table to achieve this - and if so what (Target IP
address, Netmask, gatewy, Number of hops can be configured).

TIA
Chris

Okay, not a tidy fix but what about running a VNC server on each LAN PC
and a VNC Client on the VPN Host.
Of course you're talking about telnetting in so that's a little strange, I
have successfully VNC'd from home to my work PC, so i don't see why you
shouldn't be able to have a graphical display instead of telnet even on
dialup.

Hi Chris,

Have you seen this website for your ADSL Router manufacturer?
