I am using xp pro as the host (connected to the internet). What I want
to know is what ip addresses do i use? When I use netconfig I am asked
to put in an ip address. Is this the ip address for the network card I
get from ifconfig? The howto says I should use an address range of
class A B or C when connected to the internet? Does this mean I pick a
random address within the range?
Is this what goes into netconfig?

My isp gives me a non-static ip address. If I'm connected to the
internet on the xp pro machine and networked to it using redhat (pretty
plain network using 3com card) what ip addresses do I need to set up
where and what are they?

I just want to get to the stage where I can ping the xp pro machine.

I'm flailing round a bit - just a quick question.

Within network configuration on redhat the eth0 connection status is
'active'.
I have clicked to statically set up the ip adresses on the general tab
when I edit the device.

The manual ip address settings I have given are address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway address 192.168.1.254

I can't ping this box from xp pro. It times out.

When I go through the network wizard on the xp pro machine it doesn't
give me a new network connection tried this twice with reboot as it
said.

I could phone microsoft at about £60 an hour or I could ask ask all of
you (-:

The plan is to get me network up and running and then dispose of
windows completely.
every hour i am closer i can sense it

you ping by box name or ip address?

Assuming both boxes are connedted to a switch/hub, I assume you have
almost the same settings found on XP in CMD with the command
ipconfig /all

Well, that would indicate you will not be pinging anyone until that works.

It also indicates you need to ask questions in an Microsoft news
group.

You have, but this is a linux newsgroup not Microsoft.
