Hi,
I did a search and could not find an exact explanation.
Anyway, I have a 600mhz Dell W98SE with an ethernet card for my cable
modem.
I just bought a 2.4Ghz Emachines XP with an included ethernet card.

I realize to transfer files I could use a crossover cable, BUT
I would like to use both computers, probably utilizing the speed of
the new computer as my main unit, and being able to access the older
computer's programs/files, and use it for storage mostly.

So would I need a router? A crossover cable leaves no more outputs to
hook the cable modem up too, right?

I am not computer literate, but if there is a way to explain what I
need, I would appreciate it.

For example, I was hoping there was a way under "My Computer" on the
Emachines...to display ALL the drives and access them like I do now on
my old machine. Currently I have a C,D, E,and F drives on the old
computer. Could I use the Emachines...see it's C Drive, and also the
new D,E,F,G on my old computer? Basically use the new CPU in the
Emachines to control everything, but have the full funtionality of
both computers.

Thanks for your help,
Daniel

A router with a built in firewall will do all you want safely. There
are cheaper less safe ways of doing this, but for $60 at retail prices
why bother. It should come with all the instructions you need. Be
sure to turn the firewall on.
