Im planning on implementing a domain with 3 machines each running Server 2003 Standard edition. I want to run one as the Domain Controller, one as the web server(hosting 3 different .com addresses) and one as SQL server for use with one of the 3 web pages. Will this setup work if Active Directory is on the machine that is the Domain Controller. Everything I read seems to assume that AD is installed on the Web Server.

Also say my registered domain name is microsoft.com. This page will be routed to the web server not the Domain Controller. In this case what would I name as the domain on the machine running AD, something like Microsoft.local?

Thanks you the help!

AD is *always* on the DC in a Server 2003 domain. You should never
have a web sevrer also be a DC if at all possible.

Okay. "Your registered domain name is microsoft.com."

If you wish. You *can* use the same internal and external domain
names, but managment is often easier if you don't. You'll need
separate DNS zones for these, and best would be a Standard
Primary/Secondary for your internet domain and AD for the internal.
Best would also be having your web server not a domain member, and in
a DMZ off your firewall, though that's a general suggestion and your
specific needs may preclude that.

So with this suggestion, would you name the internal domain on the domain controller something like internal.micrsoft.com or microsft.internal? Im thinking that if I use internal.micrsoft.com and name the email server Mail then the name becomes mail.internal.micrsoft.com which is longer than mail.microsoft.local.

Whats the standard for naming if there is one?

Thanks for the response as Im new to all this.
