Hey there Mad One.
If he has only 5 clients, I suggest running the firewall and web/proxy
server on perhaps the current NT4 server, as it will be a bit old and
enough for the task. All the rest of the services could be run off one of
the new SCSI servers, as with 5 or even 20 clients, I can't see the server
being overloaded. For 'secondary controller' I assume you mean secondary
domain controller. I have had Samba installed with 2 clients (50 staff in
one office) for over three years now, and have never had the samba server
go down, so I have not needed a secondary domain controller. Also,
secondary controllers are a bit of a bitch to get going with samba as you
need to do the whole LDAP backend stuff which I haven't managed to ever get
running.
I suppose you could use a second server in a DMZ configuration for
web/proxy but the number of clients I am sure the firewall will handle it
all. Depends on how much cash he has.
The proxy server should be running a web proxy (squid) and Antivirus
scanner (I use Amavis and f-prot) and any other service which is web
accessible.
I have always used Mandrake, as it has nice server wizards, and had been
pretty solid over the years.
post if you need any other info
