Hi

I've just moved in with a friend who uses a USB ADSL modem to connect
to a Speedtouch ADSL internet connection. I would like to be able to
connect my laptop wirelessly to this internet connection so bought a
Belkin wireless router with ADSL modem inbuilt expecting to be able to
either:

connect the router to the internet and set up a LAN so that both my
laptop and my mates desktop could connect

or

set up a Lan so and allow my laptop to connect through my mates desktop
using the USB modem he currently uses.

Unfortunately, he doesn't know much more that the username and password
that he uses to connect and I am unsure how to find the settings I
require. Can anyone please either suggest what settings I need to
connect the router to the internet, or where I might find this info.
(I've tried looking on the ISP website) Alternatively, what do I need
to do to set up a LAN and connect to the internet through my mates
computer.

Thanks for your help.

Will

You should have bought a DLINK G604T instead, the one with the built in ADSL
modem. Then you could have used the wireless side and he could have his PC
plugged in to the router via a network cable or used the free USB device
provided that would plug into a USB2 port on his PC.
Watch out using any wireless stuff from Belkin as ANYONE can connet into the
config page and bugger it up or use the connection. You need to switch all
security on and make sure it's locked to specific MAC addresses. Also use
WPA. Turn the power right down and SSID off so all your neighbours don't
use the connection you will be responsible for!
Belkin is absolutely terrible when it comes to security - or lack of it. No
thought has gone into it by the manufacturer. For that reason I would avoid
them. The only handy feature I saw on a Belkin was the ability to clone PC
MAC address so it cold be used on NTL/Telewest cable boxs.

You seem to have bought a router with ADSL modem built in - did it not come
with any instructions? Most I have seen have a step by step guide on how to
set them up and use them. This can also be obtained from the manufacturers
website.

Best option, should be a piece of cake.

I think that's about all you need. It's all I've ever needed when
setting up clients ADSL for them. If you'd have bought a Netgear
DG834G then it does all the setting up for you, all you do is enter
your username and password.

Ring the ISP then, or email them, or tell us who the ISP are and
someone here may know.

apart from the user / password there's only a few things like PPPoA,
VC Mux, VPI= 0 VCI = 38 that may already be the default.

What model is it. The reviews of kit at adslguide.org.uk show setup
screens etc to give you a clue.
