How do I set a password on a shared directory in Windows XP? Maybe
this is the wrong group to ask.?

You don't. W9x used passwords on shared folders, XP does not.

File access controls under XP are based on the credentials of the user;
details depend on whether you selected the simple file system (the only
choice for XP HE) or the complex file system. Start with your XP's
Help facility to learn more.
