Hello to all. I have a small wired/wireless home network and have a
question regarding broadcast channels on the wireless side. I recently
added a Dell laptop with an internal 802.111b/g card to my existing
802.111b only network. For whatever reason, Dell claims their internal card
only works well on Channel 11 in a "b" setting. I changed my WAP11 to
Channel 11 and the Dell card and it appears they are right. I did NOT
change my other laptop to Channel 11 and yet it still connects to the
Access Point with no problems. I hate to sound dumb, but shouldn't ALL the
components be on the same channel? Will I lose/gain performance either way?
Right now it's on at 11Mbps on Channel 9 while the other notebook is on at
11Mbps on Channel 11.
Thanks in advance for any and all help and best regards,
MG (confused!)

If you're using ONE access point and two cards, they have to work on the same
channel. It is not possible to connect on two different channels with one AP.

Maybe there's something wrong with the software, and it displays it wrong.

But if it's working, you won't rather loose anything.

cheers,
m.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely checked the software on my PCMCIA card
and it was where it has always been, at Channel 9. I had changed the WAP to
11, and the Linksys card on 9 still connected. I changed it to channel 11
and it did make the connection faster.
The puzzling thing is it DID connect.

windows XP ? zeroconfig connects your card automatically

Oh hell yes! Think of a computer as a tiny, super complex street
hooker. The more you put in.. Wait. No. That's not a good
analogy... Um... A computer is like a piece of paper. Er. No.
Um. I really have no idea how they work.

Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate it. My Pocket PC did the same, so
I guess it has the same feature.
Would it be more secure to untick the "Use Windows to configure...", and
set it up manually?
Thanks,

Maybe, I recently purchased an SMC 802.11g PCI wireless NIC and the manual
claims you should disable the Windows XP wireless zero config thing.
