I want to set up a simple wireless network to allow two laptops to
both access the internet over an ASDL connection. I know nothing about
wireless. Would someone be willing to explain to me the use for each
of these: Wireless access point, wireless router and wireless PC card
and tell me which of these (or all of these) I need to set up the
connection? It's all Greek to me.

If you have a DSL modem from your supplier. Plug phone cable into it.
Run a crossover cable to a wireless router, many out there, I have a
Linksys BEFW11S4. Insert wireless pcmcia in each laptop, should self
configure in Windows XP, otherwise read the stuff that come with the
pcmcia. Only change I had to make was to change the IP on the router.
My modem was 192.168.1.1, and had to set the router to 192.168.2.1.
Shouldn't have any problems.

Yes I have a DSL modem from BellSouth. Am I understanding correctly
that to make both laptops wireless, I would need a wireless router and
two pcmcia cards?

One laptop is presently connected to the modem and it doesn't really
need to be wireless, can I somehow just connect a wireless router and
use one pcmcia card for the other laptop? Would the router be
connected before the connection to the first laptop or after? Is the
DSL modem considered an access point?

I really appreciate your help ... Thanks ... scGram

One router. It will have wireless capability and probably 4-ports to
plug in non-wireless computers. Like the one you have connected to the
DSL modem.

One wireless pcmcia for each laptop, if you want to go that way.

DSL ------ Router . . . . . . wireless connection (several)
|
|-------------- cable connection (maybe 4-each)

Get a wireless router with 4 or so plugin cable connections. You can
have several wireless connections and up to 4 network cable connection
to the router, which allows each computer to comunicate with each
other, -and- use the DSL modem.

Once you get started, it will all come together.
