Hello, I set up a new Win 2008 DC with DNS and Wins. I have 3 other server
2003 DCs with DNS and Wins. I demoted my first 2003 DC and replaced it with
the new Win 2008 DC. Now only other 2008 servers in our domain, and a Vista
client that is not in our domain show up when browsing the network. I have
over 50 clients in our domain. I can perform an nslookup on the clients and
they resolve fine. I can also ping the clients by name and IP. Any ideas on
why I can't browse the rest of the clients? Thanks!

Update: A windows 2003 server gives the message: "mydomain is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The
list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.
I was able to browse the network from this computer before the swapping of
DCs.

On a WinXP client, I can still browse the network and all of the clients and
servers (2003 and 2008) appear.

Hello dadoftwo,

Make sure NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled on all machines.

Question about the demotion: Was the DC you demoted holding one of the 5
FSMO roles and GC server? If yes, did you move the FSMO roles to another
DC before and also have other GC's?

Best regards

Hello dadoftwo,

What kind of zones do you use, AD integrated? How many DNS servers do you
have and are the clients configured on the NIC's to the correct domain DNS
servers? Also do not set any external DNS ip's on the NIC.

Best regards

The demoted DC was holding all 5 of the FSMO roles and GC server. They were
all moved to the 2008 server. I have another 2008 server configured as a GC
as well.

Netbios is enabled.

We are using AD integrated zones.

We have 2 2008 DNS servers and two 2003 DNS servers.

Ding...Ding...Ding...We have a winner! I was going through all of your
suggestions one by one, and checked my DHCP server, and it had a third tier
listing that was for an outside DNS server. I changed it to an internal
server. I also went to the two 2008 servers and changed the Netbios setting
from default to enable. Then I checked the network again, and bingo all of
the computers showed up.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance! It is greatly appreciated!
Have a great weekend!

Hello dadoftwo,

Nice to hear that you solved it. If you have the need for external access,
configure the FORWARDERS under the DNS server properties in the DNS management
console on any DNS server with the ISP's DNS server if not done.

Best regards

I do have the Forwarders in place. Thank you for the follow up. You are
extremely kind to make sure that all of the bases are covered.
