Set Up Idiots Guide

Hi,

Can anyone help by pointing me towards a complete idiots guide
to setting up a home network?

I want to connect my Lappy to my main PC. I believe that I have
all the correct Adapters/Protocols installed coreectly and I have
the necessary hardware fitted and connected. But still no joy. It's
probably something simple but so far it's beaten me.
