For server virtualization, what would be the best idea for hosting the
virtual OSes on an external drive (say for a traveling sales engineer).
Would the best choice be an external USB drive or an external FireWire
drive?

"best" is kind of vague. You are more likely to have a USB port available
then a FireWire. An external USB drive is often (but not always) cheaper
than an external FireWire drive. For performance, they are supposed to be
about the same but Your Mileage May Vary (severaly testers have reported
FireWire to be somewhat faster).

In fact, if performance is an issue, the "best" choice is probably:
neither -- use eSATA. Assuming you have an eSATA port on the target computer
(or you could use an eSATA PCMCIA card).

Good luck!
