Server share permissions work in one case but not another

I have the following problem that in short is not permitting users to
succesfully log into a Windows 2003 Domain.

Servers are Windows 2003 Server Enterprise and Workstations are all Win
XP.

If I try to log into the domain, on a workstation, using a user
account, say "jdoe" for example, I get the "Cannot find profile on
server" message.

Let's call the server "Server2" for example.

However, if I log into a local account on a Workstation and then
navigate to the server via IE (by using \\Server2 in the address bar) I
get prompted for a Domain Username and password. If I supply jdoe's
credentials, I'm allowed into the appropriate shares.

Why am I able to access shares in the latter example but not the
former?

Here's another dubious clue. If I log into Server1 as Administrator
(Domain Admin) and try to navigate to Server2, Windows reports:
"\\Server2 is not accessible. Contact the administrator of this sever
to find out if you have access permissions. Login Failure: The target
accont name is incorrect." Yet I can log directly into Server2 with
the same administrator account and have full access.

What is going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

Scott

Apparently this problem is indicative of a deeper rooted issue. Can you
describe what if any, issues occured or happened in the recent past
concerning your DCs? Can you also post an ipconfig /all of your two DCs
please?

Here's some info on the "Login Failure; Target account name is incorrect"
error:

"Logon failure: the target account name is incorrect" error when promoting
domain controllers or creating replicas

Title: "Login Failure: The target account name is incorrect." when
accessing server from within Active Dir.

You can also search in Google with "Login Failure: The target account name
is incorrect" and see numerous results. Apparently there is an AD
functionality issue going on with one of your DCs. It appears at this time
it's with Server1, but need to ascertain that. The ipconfigs will help give
us a start to eliminate the obvious and the basics.
