I like to:
Set up server ad be able to do it all my self and friends. Some are
server admis professionally.
As free as possible/low cost/INDEPENDENT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
Access and remote longing so I can be anywhere and have always my stuff
available.
Secure.
Provide file serving, account management, web, basically any service
ordinarily friend can use. Including media steaming, and virtual
machines,VNC.

THE IDEA IS TO SIT @ ANY COMPUTER LINUX OR WINDOWS AND FEEL LIKE YOU
GOT IT ALL WHAT YOU USE ON YOUR PC/LAPTOP AND MORE. AND FOR ME TO
MANAGE IT ALL REMOTLY.

SO FAR I GOT DUAL XEON 2GIG RAM,ONE STATIC IP,ABLE TO CONNECT FROM
OUTSIDE THROUGH PORT FORWARDING.2X GIG LAN, CONECTED THROUGH DSL FULL
SPEED,VIGOR 2500 MODEM/ROUTER. POTENTIAL FOR SCSI 320 HADDRIVES .

USING UBUNTU ,EDGY IS THE SERVER VERSION.

I CAN MAKE SOME BACKUP SERVERS IF NEEDED FROM SPARE PC PARTS.

I HAVE WEBMIN INSTALLED AND I CAN LOG IN REMOTELY.
I USE SSH TO MANAGE THE ACTUAL SYSTEM IF I NEED TO.

NOT EXPERT SOME COMMAND LINE KNOWHOW. WILING TO LEAR DEEP THOUGHTS.
THINKING LDAP, NIS ,SAMBA, KERBEROS,NFS,HIVE,TIVO,FTP,WEB,DNS,LINUX
SERVERS ALL OS CLIENTS, NOT EXPERIENCE THOUGHT. ANY OTHER IDEAS
WELCOME.

Client side: windows, linux, ssh, vnc, dam small linux,As less client
configuration as possible to do the most. Or be able to connect to
server pull all the config/install stuff needed install it and boom
have it all.

GUIDE ME TO MAKE IT happen.

THANK YOU.

I really, seriously doubt this.

Independent from what ? Mains power ? The Intarweb ?

Remote longing sounds... hmmm.

Indeed.

Do you mean that, when you use webmin, you don't manage the *actual*
system ?

Read.
Read for a year or two, experiment for at least 5, and fall on your face
so often it isn't even funny anymore.

Or pay somebody who actually knows what they're talking about to do it
for you.

This will actually be the cheaper alternative in your case.

Ohhh-kay... this is starting to sound like religious fervor.

Don't email me, ever.

Thank you.

If i was to set up a service (which i have in the past) I would run the
following services.

Colocated Box:
-quota support
-chroot jail
-process limiting
-iptables
-- configured for packet shaping
-- concurrent session limiting per host /ip
-- maximum connection limits on ports for all addresses
-- string filtering

Services:
- pop3 / courier imap
- qmail with spam assassin (spam filtering) / vpopmail (hosting
multiple domains on 1 box)/ clamscan (anti virus scanning)
- horde/imp a for webmail client.
- apache / php (compiled with everything) / mysql / apachessl
- Id get a nice CIDR /27 from your provider too
- set up a dns server with full authoritive control for your /26 so you
can set up forward and reverse dns for your /26
- sshd access
- shoutcast
- ircd
- poptop (vpn)

IDS
-snort
-puresecure

BOX Admin tools
- lsof
- ngrep
- tcpdump
- blah balh blah (insert stuff here)

Hows that for a start?
