Hi all,

I have seen a few posts on this, but no resolution and I'm stumped...

I have recently replaced a 2003 server with 2008. Install went fine
and I have installed RRAS. remote clients can connect successfully
using PPTP, but cannot access any shares etc on the server. They cant
even ping the IP address of the server.

I have disabled the firewall on server, with no joy.

the server has a single NIC with an IP of 192.168.200.1

I have run though the RRAS config wizard a number of times, trying the
custom config with NAT enabled and disabled...

Any thoughts?

Regards

Martin

Can you RRAS PPTP IP? Have you enable IP routing?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for responding so quickly.

Not sure what you mean "can you rras pptp ip"? I can succesfully
connect to this server from another remote network, using PPTP.

As for routing, on the properties of the RRAS , i have LAN and dial
on demand rouring enabled for IP4, nothing enabled for IP6. IP4 remote
access server is also ticked, IP6 isnt.

hope that helps?

M

I should also point out that the 2003 ran fine as a PPTP vpn server,
and I have installed RRAS on 2003 at numerous sites without a hitch,
so I think i must be missing something fundamental (but probably
obscure too!)

Sorry, it should be "can you ping the RRAS PPTP IP"? Also try tracert server
Ip adders. post back with the result. Posting the result of ipconfig /all on
the server may help too.

Ah, I see.

1st up on server iteslf, I can ping it fine:

Pinging 192.168.200.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.200.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.200.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.200.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.200.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Now from a remote client

Pinging 192.168.200.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

and a tracert result (from remote client)

Tracing route to 192.168.200.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 * * * Request timed out.
2 * * * Request timed out.

IP of PPP adapter RAS (Dial In) Interface is 192.168.200.103. Can you ping
it from remote computer? Also one of DNS is 1. Why?

On remote computer, i can ping .103 and it replies. however thats the
address assigned to the VPN adaptor on the remote machine. if issue \
\192.168.200.103 on remote machine, it shows the shares on the remote
machine, not server.

as for the ::1 entry for DNS on server, that is I assume the IP6
address? I certainly haven't changed any settings on ip6. I'm haven't
read up/dont fully understand IP6, so have left well alone....

Regards

Martin

BTW. I have configured the server as an SSL vpn server with a proper
cert (from godaddy). My remote machine is my Vista laptop, and that
connect fine to the SSL vpn, but with the same problems with pinging
etc)

That cannot be correct. Look at the ipconfig you posted. 192.168.200.103
is the ppp adapter on the server.

When you are connected by vpn, click on the connection icon in the task
bar of the client and then click the Details tab. This will show you the IP
address of both client and server being used for the connection. These are
the PPP adapter addresses, not the NIC addresses.

Bill,

when I checked the remote PC - the server and client ip address were
both .103? No sure why?

As a hunch i disabled the dhcp server on the ADSL router, then
installed Windows 2008 DHCP server...

and voilà, all is well - server address is .109, client address.104.
Pinging/browsing etc is now fine...

question is why didn't the configuration work with router acting as
DHCP server? Worked fine when server was 2003?

anyway,

thanks to all, especially Bob in guiding me in right direction -

hope it helps others..

M
