I have a vpn server connected behind a "smoothwall 2.0
express" firewall I mad a port forwarding for the ports
1723 and 47 to the server ipaddress. When i try to make a
vpn connection to this server i get the following error
code 721 The computer did not respond.
Can someone help me with this issue.

You do NOT want to open TCP port 47. You need to allow TCP port 1723 and IP
Protocol 47 (GRE). SOme firewalls call this "PPTP pass through"

When you create a PPTP tunnel, the actual data is sent as an IP packet
with a GRE header. (GRE stands for Generic Routing Encapsulation). The data
packet is first encrypted, then encapsulated with the GRE header. The IP
address on the outside wrapper is a public IP address. (The private address
is part of the encrypted payload).

If the GRE packet has to pass through a router/firewall, this must be
configured to allow GRE in both directions. The VPN data passing through
this router will have GRE headers. If GRE is blocked in either direction,
the VPN connection will fail.
