I recently installed a new Dell server with Windows Server 2003. I
previously had a NetWare 5.0 server so that's where my knowledge lies (i'm a
CNE).
I have around 30 Windows 98SE client PCs and 40 Windows 2k/XP clients.
The problem I have is that although I can get the Win98 clients to access
the server and shares, the will freeze/hang up at random intervals for
varying lengths of time. The first couple of times it happened, it was for
about 15-20min - now it is more often an hour or more. This can happen 2 or
3 times a day.
I have entered all the Win98 PCs in the Active Directory as pre-2000
computers and installed the DSCLIENT on each PC.
When the PCs hang up, usually the user is doing something in Word or Excel,
but this just may be coincidence as these are the main apps that these guys
use. However other applications remain "live" - i.e. we use Pegasus Mail
and it works okay when Word/Excel freezes.
Also when one PC hangs, each PC after that which tries to access a share or
to print then hangs until ALL Win98 PCs have hung.
When you reboot the PC and enter your logon name and password, the desktop
doesn't load and the PC waits (a random time) for the server to allow a
connection - usually all PCs get logged back on to the server at the same
time. When I press CTRL-ALT-DEL the 'Task Manager' box shows that MPREXE is
not responding.
The server event logs show no errors.
Can anyone offer assistence?
thanks
