Server 2000 VPN and remote wireless 40-bit WEP clients?

Hi. I have a Windows 2000 Standard server with a Linksys WRT54G
router. I've set up RRAS VPN on the server with VPN passthrough on the
router and a dynamic DNS entry. Everything works great.

I have a consultant with an old Apple Airport 802.11b wireless router
at his home office and with his own ISP. With his wireless set to
40-bit WEP, he could not make a VPN connection with my server. When he
changed to an Airport Express with Wireless G, then it worked.

Can anyone explain why this happened? I thought that once the
consultant's Mac was authenticated to his own network, my server
couldn't "know" what kind of encryption he was using for his own
wireless connection. Or is there a difference between Wireless-B and
Wireless G?

The older router probably does not support IPSec over UDP, whereas most
newer routers do.
