serial cable connections

I am looking for resources on the web that can teach me how to
configure a linux client to connect to a windows server through a
serial cable, and use it for web access.

The computer I am trying to configure is currently set up in this way
with windows and I want the setup to work in linux also. I didn't make
this setup and it is also not my computer - so I can't use the answers
I already found in this group like "switch to ethernet" or "use
windows to log in to linux". Please don't give me answers like those
again.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, including help in figuring out
how this setup works in windows exactly - so that I'll know the
parameters I need to know to make the linux setup. And of course I
need guides on how to set up the parameters in linux once I know what
they are (though I think I got most of them figured out).

Thanks.

I think Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) will allow you to have
tcp/ip with a serial port. Not sure how it works or is set up.

Use PPP. Here's how the Linux end works:

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...PPP-HOWTO.html

If you're running some kind of GUI desktop then there's probably some sort
of pointy-clicky PPP setup program as well, but I've never used any of
those.

I've absolutely no clue how you configure the Windows box to be a PPP
server, but it can be done.

Asking "how this works in windows exactly" in a Linux newsgroup is unlikely
to be very productive.

Read Chapter 29 of Grant Edwards' recommendation

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...PPP-HOWTO.html

and use a null-modem cable. Save yourself pain by buying the null-modem
cable.

You'll likely also need to do a turkey dance with the Windows box using
chat by, e.g., adding the pppd option

connect "chat -v '' CLIENT CLIENTSERVER"

You may also need a null-modem .inf file, which should be available at
the MS web site. And you might need to authenticate to the Windows box
by setting up chap-secrets using any name and a blank password ("").
Adding the pppd noauth and debug options would probably be a good
idea too.

I don't do Windows so this is all second-hand information. If no one
can specify what you need to do better then use this as a start and
do cut-and-try, looking to the pppd and chat log messages for clues.
