On boot, "sendmail" starts giving an OK, but does come up after such a
awfully long time (like 5 minutes...!) that something must be wrongly
setup. I am not sure why and would appreciate any hints.

My only hints: Red Hat 9, a small 2 computers network; 192.168.0.6
(machine with slow start sendmail), 192.168.0.3 a linksys router
192.168.0.1.

Do you *really* need sendmail to work?

Otherwise you're best off disabling it. (to do this, type ntsysv (as root)
and deselect sendmail from that menu).

It can always be started manually later.

Furthermore, I suspect that this slow boot happens when you're *not*
connected to the internet.

As always, the timeout is a result of name resolution problems, and the
logfile should indicate this with something like "Unable to qualify my
hostname, using short name". The DNS timeout is usually 2 minutes.

In the /etc/hosts file, you should have something similar to:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.6 slowhost.example.net slowhost

Right on the target, sir. To change, in /etc/hosts

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost

to

127.0.0.1 heron heron.bn heron

did it. (less than a second wait now) Could not find the log message,
however. Great thanks.

Of course, that may break a good number of other programs which
expect to be able to look up localhost. Adapting ynotssor's solution
will both solve your sendmail dilemma and allow programs which look
up localhost to continue to work.

Oh, and please don't top-post.
