"Self re-installing" a BT line

Hi group(s)

Situation:
Father-in-law got new computer for xmas, wants to get ADSL broadband.
Currenlty have NTL phone line (previously was BT), Sky Digital (so
probably Sky Broadband if it's available - they will be very light and
un-fussy internet users and the wireless router will be handy).

There are several phone points around the house, all fully functional.
The BT line has been snipped before it enters the house, and is
currently coiled up and clipped to the outside wall of the house where
it's been for the last 10 years. There is no BT socket in the house
anymore, master or otherwise.

Not keen on paying BT for a new installation.

Plan:
Acquire a master socket and using the existing cable from the telegraph
pole to install a new master socket in the house, then ring BT and ask
for free reconnection transferring number from NTL. Once connected we
hook up the extensions to the master socket, enabling those to all work
aswell.

Requirements:
Pinouts for the BT master socket. Father in law thinks it's orange/white
on one pin and white/orange on another. I'm sure this information is
available on the net somewhere so I'm going to check in a moment.

Is this viable?

Unless the line is still 'stopped' rather than ceased, you will most
probably have to pay a connection fee.
As it is 10 years since it was used I think it highly unlikely it would
still be stopped - although stranger things have happened.
You could try connecting it up and seeing if you get the soft dial tone,
then dial 17070 or 147017070 to see what the number is/was and contact 150 /
0800 800 150 and ask for a start on the line. If you connect it up and get
nothing, then it is likely you will have to pay the full whack to be
reconnected as it will be classed as a new provide.

Well why don't you take BT up on their offer to all who eloped to Cable and
have a Prodigal Son recovery for free.

As regards doing it yourself, if your knowledge is that hazy I would forget
it.
3 wires are need from masters to secondary, 2 & 5 for line and 3 for the
ring circuit.
My prefernce would be using the pair colours in order
ie
Blue/White and White/Blue to 2 & 5
Orange/White & White/Orange to 3 & 4
Green/White & White/Green to 1 & 6 (not needed)

etc
etc

He did mention something about seeing a "come back for free" offer. I've
had a quick scan on bt.com but see no mention of it.

My knowledge is hazy, his is better but he is an electrician with
experience in certain telephony devices. I think if we knew which wires
to connect where we could do it between us.

After 10 years, the line will be showing as "ceased" on BT systems and
all routing will have been recovered. A new connection will be
required

But BT say that as long as the wiring at the propert is intact they will
reconnect for free. I left BT in July'96, after nine and a half years
with Telewest I reconnected to BT for free.

My mom did the same thing but all of the original external BT wiring had
been removed when BT replaced the pole in the street. She still didn't
have to pay reconnection as the guy that came round said he would put it
through as though everything excisted.

Had no problems with NTL in what must be coming up for 5 years now. Seems to
have much better performance than friends I have with ADSL.

I do realise they have merged, but they are still marketed as different
products at the moment. That is of course until it is all rebranded with
Virgin.

I'm keeping that option as last resort. I detest NTL with every fibre of
my body.
