selective inability to connect to internet sites

Here's an odd one:

LAN accesses internet over ADSL using Zoom X3 modem / router

On one PC IE6 will not access any sites, such as www.bbc.co.uk with
error "Cannot find server or DNS Error" coming back instantly

On same PC Opera browser works fine. Agent also works fine for news,
hence I can type this.

Putting IP address into IE doesn't help. Can ping sites by IP or by
name, so the DNS is working and the packets are flowing. Also note the
Opera works but not IE.

IE works on Laptop.

Mozilla Firebird just installed has same symptoms as IE. Mercury mail
transport is SMTP sending happily but POP3 colecting is failing.

Seems like some sort of partial failure of TCP/IP

any clues ?

Sounds like a configuration problem with IE only. In IE goto Tools,
Internet Options, Connections. Is this configured to use a default
dial up connection? If not, check LAN settings and see if you what
proxy servers are set.

no dialups on the machine

no proxies
