Seing both PC's

I think I have asked this before but I think I have exhausted all avenues
and still cannot get to the bottom of this:

2 PC's (ones a Toshiba Laptop - the other is a Dell Desktop), Both have
FAT32 System, Laptop has ME, Dell has Windows XP Home. Linked up by CAT5E
Ethernet Crossover cable, direct connection Ethernet socket to Ethernet
socket.

I can see both PC' s listed in mshome in my network places in windows ME on
the laptop. From the Dell (XP) I can read and change files on the Laptop
(ME).

From the laptop (ME) no matter what I do when I try to map the network drive
for the DELL (XP) it just keeps asking for that bloody password for
networking and then not recognising it and then I cannot get any further.

I have tried setting both PC's with logging on both PC's with the same
username and passwords and that still doesn't work, I have tried logging on
with blank (no password) in the password box and that don't work. I have
made sure firewall is turned off on DELL (XP) and it is set up for sharing
OK but no matter what I am doing it is (laptop - ME) still asking me for
this blooming password and not accepting anything.

I am almost there, at least I can see the DELL (XP) listed in mshome but
obviously there must be some setting I am overlooking.

Anyone got any other Ideas please apart from the things I tried. I really
could do with this working both ways.

Cheers,

Andy.

Using the same user name and password is usually the easiest way, XP
won't allow access without a password. Have you specifically shared the
drive/folder on the XP machine? They are not shared by default.

Thanks Jeff, yes tried using same usenames and passwords,

mind you on both PC's I used 'local_network' as username and 'lan' as
passwords for both. I wonder if I should try using just 'lan' as the
usernames and 'lan' as the passwords on both and see if that works? do you
reckon it might?

XP folder is shared and also ticked the ' allow network users to change my
files'

It shouldn't matter what you use a long as they are exactly the same, I
did spot you had done that - the comment was to encourage you to stick
with it :-)

Are you using the same workgroup name on both PC's? I haven't used ME,
do you actually enter a user name and password to log on to ME or can
you by-pass it like you could with W98?

Sorry, I'm clutching at straws here, you seem to be doing everything
right.

I am using the default mshome network name. After setting up the laptop (ME)
networking setup wizard then yes, the box comes up on starting windows ME to
log on using a username and password.

It is so strange because there is not much difference between windoze 98 and
ME and I am sure that I have heard other people getting on fine networking
windoze 98 with an XP computer as long as you use the same username and
password on all PC's - well I have been doing that and it still will not
allow the laptop to map the XP drive. Especially them both being FAT32
drives I wouldn't have thought I would have had this problem. I would
understand if the XP had NTFS and it was being too careful about security. -
If I pull any more hair out trying to figure this I am going to go bald, if
I don't pull all my hair out I will go grey - I cant win :-)

XP uses a different protocol to earlier MS OS's for login by default.
You can get it to use the simpler (and less secure 98/95/ME) protocol
by tweaking the registry.

What will be happening is that XP is trying to make access the share by
sending an authentication request using a protocol that ME cannot
understand. So even though the username/password pair is valid the
connection is not made.

I have seen this documented in Samba help pages somewhere. Sorry I
can't remember the details - someone else might know or you can try
Googling for the details. One of the login protocols involved is NTLM.

Isn't there a setting like "Use network login as primary login" hidden
somewhere in WinME?

That's the one I've seen in W98, I have never used ME though so I don't
know it it's the same.

To allow network access using a blank password:

[Start] [Run] and type gpedit.msc and click [OK]

Navigate to Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings /
Local Policies / Security Options

Double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to
console login only.

Select the radio button next to Disabled and click [OK]

Thanks for the info. That would be ideal but my version is XP Home Edition
so it doesn't have gpedit.msc unfortunately.
