Hi all. I just purchased a Netgear MR814 router and currently have 2
computers directly connected to it. (In a few weeks I'll be getting a
laptop with a wireless card. But the price was so good on this router that
I bought it early.) These two computers are currently sharing a cable modem
successfully. Both have the ZoneAlarm firewall software installed and
running.

Here's my question: After I get the wireless laptop and get it connected
successfully to the router and the cable modem, I fully intend to implement
whatever security is necessary (haven't quite done all my research yet). Is
there anything I need to do NOW to keep out unwanted intruders into my
mini-network?

I was sitting here watching the lights blinking furiously on the router and
the cable modem and started wondering. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Carol.

You could immediately set up WEP (encryption) and even do mac address
filtering if it supports it. IIRC it does, I think this is the same
unit I have.

Then when you get the card for the laptop, just configure it to use
the correct WEP settings.

that should help keep out the majority of neighbors. The serious
hackers will still get in, but that should take care of your worries.
