Hi,

I am trying to add a second nic card to my Redhat 8.0 system (kernel
2.4.20-19.8), and I have encountered a whole lot of problems. I will
describe what steps I went through, and what is wrong right now, and
perhaps somebody out there can help me.

I already had a DSL connection working on ppp0 through eth0.

I added the second nic (DFE-538Tx) and upon booting the computer Linux
detected and suggested RealTex 8239 driver, which I accepted but did not
configure it.

Then, while reading how to go about setting up a private home network, I
noticed it would be nice have a hostname. So I changed the host name in
/etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/hosts. I also added the nic card though
SystemSettings->Network GUI and configured it giving it an IP
(192.168.xxx.xxx) and related info. Since changing through the GUI, my
ppp0 connection is not working anymore.

So I removed the second nic card After booting again, Linux detected
H/W removed, so that was fine. When I logged in again, I also deleted
the entry from the SystemsSettings->Network GUI of the eth1 (second nic)
card (whenever I change something in GUI,it asks me if "it may change
permissions" on /etc/sysconfig/network/devices/ifcnfg-ppp0! I say NO.).
Then I just set up my adsl connection again through /sbin/adsl-setup so
that my setting were as they were before.

Now, I can again do "/sbin/ifup ppp0" and /sbin/ifconfig does show eth0
and ppp0 and lo, and adsl-status also shows ppp0 is up and running, but
Mozilla says it cannot find the webpage, as if the connection has not
been established.

I couldn't figure anything else, so to get everything as it was before,
I also reverted back to my hostname of localhost.localdomain. Curiously,
when I login, Gnome has been saying ti cannot find IP address associated
with the hostname and that I should change something in /etc/hosts. I
have already done that, but it still complains.

Any ideas? In short, I put in the second nic, configured it through GUI,
and things did not work. So I removed it, removed it through GUI too,
and things still not work. BTW, when the second nic was "in", ppp0 was
not connecting at all. Now that the second nic is "out", it is
connecting (adsl-status says it is up), but Mozilla cannot see an
internet connection.

Any suggestions?

All help is appreciated.

Thanks,
->HS
