I've got a small home network via an adsl router.

My handheld has quite a poor signal range whereas the laptop is quite good.

Would I be able to use the laptop as a gateway for the handheld; I do have
two wifi connections that I could connect to the laptop so one could be peer
to peer and the other ad-hoc (One via PC card the other via USB).

Yes this is possible. You can put both cards in the laptop and create a
bridge between the two.

But.. what would this achieve? Access Points / routers have much better
range, so unless the handheld is much closer to the laptop than the router
you won't see much of a difference.

Yes, I was thinking of the handheld and laptop being in the same room.

The handheld seems to have a very weak signal if I am not in the same
room as the access point whereas the laptop seems ok two rooms away.
