Search over WAN fails

Hi, if I mount my windows 2003 server DFS point across a T1 VPN connection
and try and search for a file, it fails immediately. I am pretty sure if
fails on any mounted drive across a slower that LAN speed link as far as I
can tell. Is this a known problem? It seems to fail immediately without
even trying to search. Is there anyway I can change this and make it work?
And if not is there an explanation why it doesn't work that I can pass on to
my users?
