search for computers

I am helping a friend out in his apartment complex which he owns. He has
wired the entire building for network connectivity and thinks there are
people using it. Is there a utility that will search for computer's
(computer names) on the network to let him know if there are machines on it?
Some kind of useful network utility?

NET VIEW perhaps?

Or if there's a DHCP server dishing out IP's within a known range, just ping the range.
