The original poster said nothing about that. He only asked for a
screenshot.

Actually, a lot of universities are doing legitimate technical
research on wireless security. Which is a good thing for the industry.

I suggested at our school site,,,their first reponse-"We're going to
in-house wire it because of security concerns."
It's too easy to crack wep. We (consumers) are going to need much more than
simple wep.

Actually it's good to hear that your school is concerned about
wireless security. Read the following article about the other
companies...

Until someone comes up with a good solution for doing that to 100
workstations at once, this is cloud-cuckoo land. Or have they, and I
missed something?

Ok, I read "consumer" as home user, not coporate client. Besides, there
are solutions for the 100 workstation issue. LEAP, VPN, 802.1x.

How many home users buy Cisco? Rule out LEAP

How many home users have a facility to terminate a VPN to their LAN?
Rule out VPN

How many users have a RADIUS server? Rule out 802.1x

So, for home users, WEP with key changing for what? a couple of
machines remains a viable option.

I was thinking of consumer as "noncorporate" educational,
multi-occupancy housing, village WLANs etc. In that circumstance there
might be a fair amount of machines, not all accessible to the WEP
admin.

I've 3 machines, plus two laptops that are not always on or indeed in
the house. Changing the WEP key on them all once per month would be a
relatively large pain, involving a lot of running up and down stairs.

TBF tho, I abandoned wireless for all but the lappys as it was
basically too much hassle to get it working reliably, and I was
rewiring the house anyway so I ran cat5e in. :-)

Accepted but in general, we're talking about the home user who is
probably trying to get out to the internet rather than in.

I wonder, has anyone tried sticking their WAP on the internet side or
DMZ size of their router and then establishing a VPN to the facility
within that router and then going back out via the internet policies of
the router?

Pretty standard thing to do in a corp environment but haven't got the
kit to try it in a domestic environment.

David.
