Here's the situation I have. We have a manualy update process at my company.
Becuase our backup process now takes to almost 10:00 the next morning I was
wondering if there is a way to schedule a server reboot. This way I could
download and install the updates via microst update website during the day
and schedule the reboot for 1:00 AM that night. IS there a way to do this
with server 2003. my concern is I know server 2003 has the event tracker
every time you restrat or shutdown.

Thanks.

You can use the shutdown command, builtin windows 2003.

For example:
shutdown /r /f /t 60 /c "Rebooting for Windows Update" /d p:02:18

You can wrap it in a batch file and then use the windows task scheduler

Usage: shutdown [/i | /l | /s | /r | /a | /p | /h | /e] [/f]
[/m \\computer][/t xxx][/d [p:]xx:yy [/c "comment"]]

On that server or in Group Policy you could schedule the updates to be
installed at 1:00 that night.
Backups are always going to interfere with overnight update on a backup
server, but you don't need the server at 3:00pm so you could just schedule
the updates for then.
